As families gather this Thanksgiving to reflect on gratitude and togetherness, one family is experiencing a bittersweet resolution to a decades-old mystery. The skeletal remains of two individuals, along with a trove of glittering jewelry, have been recovered from a submerged car in Georgia, bringing long-awaited closure to the case of Charles and Catherine Romer, who vanished 44 years ago while on their journey home for the holiday season.

Charles and Catherine Romer
The discovery, made by volunteer divers just days before Thanksgiving, has cast a somber light on the Romers’ disappearance. Among the recovered items were a Rolex watch, a diamond ring, and other valuable jewelry—possessions that raise chilling questions about whether the couple’s tragic fate was an accident or a crime. The jewelry alone, once appraised at tens of thousands of dollars, points toward the likelihood of foul play.

A Journey Interrupted
In April 1980, the Romers, a snowbird couple in their mid-70s, had left Florida to return to their home in Scarsdale, New York. Their route included a planned overnight stay at a Holiday Inn in Georgia, where they unpacked some belongings before taking a short drive—one from which they would never return. Their disappearance baffled investigators, leaving behind a fortune worth millions and nine grieving granddaughters.
The couple’s 1979 Lincoln Continental disappeared with them, leaving authorities and their family to wrestle with unanswered questions. Were they targeted for their wealth and valuables, or did an innocent drive tragically end in disaster?
The Bombshell Discovery
This week, divers pulled the twisted remains of a car from a murky pond near the Romers’ last known location, now the Royal Inn. Inside, the skeletal remains of two individuals and several personal effects were found. Law enforcement is working to confirm the vehicle’s VIN to match it with the Romers’ car.

A Glynn County police spokesperson described the car as “a twisted hunk of mess,” a haunting testament to how long it lay submerged. Among the items recovered were a license plate bearing the Romers’ initials and the striking jewelry that once adorned Catherine Romer.
The evidence has led investigators to consider both possibilities: a fatal accident or a robbery gone awry.
A Thanksgiving Without Questions
For Christine Seaman Heller, one of the Romers’ granddaughters, the discovery brings relief amid sorrow. “While the investigation will take months to complete, this development offers a resolution far better than the endless questions we’ve faced for so long,” she said. The family had long feared the couple had been murdered, a theory now complicated by the potential evidence of a car accident.
Reflecting on Gratitude
As this Thanksgiving season unfolds, the Romers’ story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring hope for answers. The jewelry found in the car, once a symbol of their success and love, now underscores the tragedy of their untimely fate. While many will sit at their Thanksgiving tables surrounded by loved ones, the Romers’ family will reflect on the gratitude of finally having answers—and the enduring legacy of two lives interrupted.
Though the investigation continues, the Romers’ story reminds us to cherish every moment and hold loved ones close, especially during this season of thanks.

And, on this Thanksgiving, I’m especially moved by the story I shared in today’s video about Detective Dennis Wustenhoff, whose family has fought tirelessly for 34 years to see justice served. Dennis was tragically murdered in February 1990, and while many believe his killer has been identified, no charges have been filed. It’s a chilling reminder of the persistence needed to bring closure to unsolved cases. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to watch the video at this link to learn more about his case and the family’s unwavering determination.
I’m also incredibly thankful for the broader true crime community that plays such a vital role in keeping these cases in the public eye. Together, we are amplifying voices, creating awareness, and providing hope to families who have waited too long for answers. Your involvement matters, and it inspires me every day.
As you celebrate today, please take a moment to think about the families who are still searching for justice. Your support, your voice, and your willingness to “Be On the LookOut” makes a real difference.
