Throughout my life I had heard tales of my great-great-grandmother, Jane McKechnie Walton, and her incredible journeys across the Atlantic Ocean and up the Mississippi River. How, as a seven- year-old girl in 1852, she had walked across the American plains to her destination in the Utah Territory. Jane would eventually marry and with her husband, Charles, would settle into a life of simplicity on a peaceful homestead in a remote part of northern Utah. Unfortunately, life for Jane was not meant to be simple or peaceful. Jane and Charles would soon be asked by their church to take their young family to the four corners area of Utah to help establish new settlements. Always faithful and obedient, the two would accept the assignment and unknowingly become part of the most harrowing episode in pioneer history conquering the infamous Hole in the Rock.

After nearly 40 years of investigative work, my natural inclinations led me to research the nearly unbelievable tales that had been handed down through the generations. Along with the many stories, there were questions surrounding Jane’s untimely death, and I felt compelled to put some investigative experience to use. The circumstances leading up to my discoveries would be remarkable, and to this day unexplainable.
